On Perceptual Bandwidth, Slow Listening and Auditory Envelopment

Thomas Lund

Vortragender: Thomas Lund, Senior Technologist bei Genelec

The talk summarises recent studies on human sensing. Perception has 400 ms of latency, it is based on reach-out more than on reception, and adults have a highly limited sensory bandwidth. How we experience the world is related to professional listening with acuity, and Auditory Envelopment (AE) is introduced. AE has a universally stimulating effect on young children as well as old people. Physical reactions to AE may be one reason why music and singing has been performed under dedicated indoor settings for millennia.Practical guidelines for healthy listening are provided, including methods for testing a professional listening room for AE transparency.
